About

On 15 March 2013, Oxford’s Phoenix Picturehouse celebrates its 100th birthday. There aren’t a lot of cinemas that have been around for so long, so we reckon this is pretty exciting!

There will be lots of things going on in the screens and the bar over the birthday weekend. We have classics from the silver screen (if you’ve never seen Buster Keaton play a dreaming projectionist in SHERLOCK JR then now’s your time, and it’s supported by two of Tex Avery’s finest cartoons), and the ultimate late night cult movie ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (get those fishnets on!)

As we’re celebrating the cinema’s future as well as its past, we have not one but FOUR preview screenings of upcoming movies over the centenary weekend. Here’s your chance to impress your friends by being the first in Oxford to see them. For those less shallow, you should come anyway because they’re all terrific! Please click on the ‘What’s On’ tab for further details.

Beyond March, we have some top-notch retro film seasons running (mainly on Sundays) through the course of the year. The first few films are already on sale at http://www.picturehouses.co.uk and we’ll announce the rest as we go along. They’re all good ‘uns so don’t let your attention slip!

As well as putting together some great film seasons, we’ve been working hard to compile a history of the cinema, which we think you’re going to like. You can get a taster of what we’ve uncovered by visiting out modest photographic exhibition in the cinema’s upstairs bar, which will launch on 15 March and will be on display until mid-April.

In autumn 2013, we’ll be launching our book about the cinema’s history, which features a smorgasbord of first-hand recollections, archival delvings, and hitherto unseen photographs and documents. Please check back for further updates.

Please join us in celebrating our cinema’s special birthday. A cinema is nothing without its patrons, so we hope to share the experience with as many of you as we can, whether you are supporters old or new.

Here’s to the next 100 years!
